This recipe was originally sourced from thriftyfrugalmom.com. We made a few changes & added a few ingredients to make it our preferred version! We went a little lighter on the egg and added some spice to find our own perfect blend. ๐Ÿ‘

Warm Vanilla Custard Drink

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 C Milk (try Almond Milk or Coconut Milk to add a new twist!)

  • 1/3 C Sugar or Maple Syrup (use more or less to your preference.)

  • 1 Egg

  • Pinch of Salt

  • 1/8 ts. Vanilla

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • Pinch of Ground Nutmeg

This recipe makes enough for One Large Mug. Double the recipe (or more) for greater quantities.

Directions:

  1. Prep all ingredients. Mise en place means "everything in place". It is the first step to cooking successfully.

  2. Put milk and sugar in a double boiler pan, or a regular pan will work if you don't have a double boiler pan. Double boiler pans are great for melting chocolate or warming milk, as those ingredients are prone to burning. We found this double boiler on Amazon with great reviews!

  3. Once the sugar has melted into the milk, add the cinnamon stick to the milk.

  4. Meanwhile, blend eggs, salt and vanilla.

  5. Once the milk starts to bubble, remove from heat and add a small amount of milk to the egg mixture. Blend immediately.

  6. NOTE: Bringing the milk to a boil and adding to the eggs essentially cooks the egg enough that it is no longer considered raw. If you add the milk too fast, sometimes the egg will cook too fast as well and can contain egg pieces. If this happens, you can still use your drink mix! Just strain it through a sieve before serving.

  7. Add the rest of the milk to the egg mixture and blend well.

  8. We ran our mixture through a sieve just in case to remove any larger pieces.

  9. Pour into one large mug, add whip cream if you desire, and sprinkle with nutmeg.

  10. Enjoy your delicious Warm Vanilla Custard Drink!

  11. You can also allow the mixture to cool in the refrigerator and blend with ice for a delicious cold drink!
